Overview of Zanskar Valley

Zanskar is the remote Valley of Leh-Ladakh famous for its unspoiled beauty and tranquil environs. Deafening silence here could force you wonder how the crowded bustling metro cities are able to produce sounds. Only birds chirping, rivers flowing, bell ringing, winds blowing could be heard here amidst the tranquility of nature.

The Valley is situated on the banks of Zanskar River and thus offers some adventure for those adrenaline junkies.  When the weather is favorable, rafting could be experienced in this roaring Zanskar River.

Apart from this, the culture of Zanskar which revolves around Buddhism and monasteries is extremely rich and valuable. Stongdey Monastery’, ‘Karsha Gompa’, ‘Rangdum Gompa’ and ‘Zangla Monastery’ are some of the monasteries that are most revered and preached by locals. These beautiful monasteries are replete with intricate designs, best of architecture, chanting mantras that create a vibe that is unmatched with any place. Besides, Zanskar also has in its store several cave monasteries (‘Zongkhul Monastery’ and ‘Phuktal Monastery’) which make for popular and unique tourist attractions lying hidden inside huge mountain caverns.

Phugtal Monastery

Location: Zanskar, Ladakh, India

The Phutkal Monastery is located in the remote Lungnak Valley, south to Zanzkar. Phuktal monastery is a far away destination and there are no other attractions around it. However, the place itself is a beauty surrounded by dramatic landscapes and small villages en-routing Phuktal. This Buddhist monastery is not only built on a cliff but it also has a natural cave. It is believed that around 2,550 years ago important sages, scholars, and translators visited this place. The Phuktal monastery was and it still is a preferred place by the scholars and teachers to meditate.

Zongkhul Gompa

Location: Zanskar, Ladakh, India

Most stunning and magnetic site in Zanskar Valley is the ZongkhulGompa located located just before the trails that ascend to the Omasi-la pass. The monastery is built between two caves and it is believed that Indian Yog iNaropa used to meditate here where the monastery is built. Along with architecture, walls are the most stunning feature of the monastery. Thangkas and paintings within the monastery are unique too.

Panikhar

Location: Zanskar, Ladakh, India

The most beautiful inhabited region in Himalayas is Panikhar Valley. The stunning valley is at a distance of 75 kms from Kargil. From the nearby Parkachik La one can enjoy the panoramic view of the the glacier and that of the mighty Nun-Kun mountains. The place can’t be missed once you visit Zanskar.

Stongday Monastery

Location: Zanskar, Ladakh, India

Stongday Monastery is the second largest and the oldest monasteries in the Zanskar region. Its beauty captivates the beholder with sprawling whitewashed complex soaring above the Rocky Mountains.

Weather in Zanskar Valley

The region has cold semi arid climate that ranges between 7°C - 30°C in summers, and between -20°C - 12°C in Monsoons from the month of October and May.

The months between June and September are ideal for visiting Ladakh.

How to Reach

By Air

You can take a flight to Kushok Bakula Airport in Leh from Delhi. It is around 2-3 hours flight from Delhi. On landing you can hire a cab to reach Zanskar Valley.

By Train

You can both board a train till Delhi or Chandigarh and there on hire a taxi to reach Ladakh by road.

By Road

Ladakh is connected by road from two sides- Manali-Leh highway and Srinagar- Kargil highway. You can choose any of the two routes to reach Zanskar Valley via Khardung La pass
