Kozhikode

Kozhikode, also known as Calicut is a coastal city in Kerala. Kozhikode is also popularly named as “City of Spices” during classical antiquity and middle ages. Vasco da Gama landed here in the year 1498 and opened the shore for a major trade port between Europe and India. The major attraction today here is the central Kozhikode Beach, overlooked by an old lighthouse and is a popular spot for watching the sunset. Inland, tree-lined Mananchira Square, with its musical fountain, surrounds the massive Mananchira Tank, an artificial pond.

Close by, centuries-old Mishkal Mosque is a brightly painted architectural landmark. The 14th-century Tali Temple, built in traditional Keralan style, has a wooden roof with brass carvings. North of here, the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium has interactive exhibits and a 3D cinema, while the Krishna Menon Museum displays the personal belongings of this 20th-century Indian statesman. South of the city, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary protects domestic and migratory bird species, including terns and sand plovers. Northeast of Kozhikode, hiking trails wind past waterfalls and evergreen forests at Thusharagiri.

Situated on the Malabar Coast, Kozhikode is a beautiful and happening beach on the western side of Kozhikode. The beach is accessible through four road overbridges in the city. The beach has paved stones and illumination.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

Location: Kozhikode, Kerela, India

Spread over the cluster of Islands where the Kadalundipuzha River flows into the Arabian Sea, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary lies in the Malappuram district. The Sanctuary hill is around 200 m above sea level. The Sanctuary is a home to over a humdred species of native birds including 60 species of migratory birds including herons, sandpipers, cormorants, terns and gulls. You can visit there for the pleasure of bird watching.

Sarovaram Bio Park

Location: Kozhikode, Kerela, India

The Bio Park is place to conserve mangrove species and other flora and is identified as one of the 27 wetlands in India. The park houses the 7 mangrove species and 29 associated species. 34 types of birds are inhabited in the park.

By Air

Calicut International Airport is 26 kilometres (16 mi) from the city at Karipur. Regular domestic services are operated to major Indian cities. There are frequent international flights to the Middle Eastern air hubs like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Salalah, Muscat, Dammam, Riyadh, Sharjah, Bahrain, Doha and to domestic hubs Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi.

By Train

The history of railways in Malabar dates to 1861 when the first tracks were laid between Tirur and Beypore.[44] Kozhikode railway station is the only A1 railway station in Palakkad railway division; it is in the Shoranur-Mangalore section. Today, Kozhikode is well connected by rail to cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kollam, Palakkad, Coimbatore, Katpadi, Vellore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Kannur, Mangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.

By Road

SH 28 is the Kerala section of highway connecting Kozhikode and Gudalur near Ooty. SH 29 pass through the city and connects NH 212, Malabar Christian College, civil station, Kunnamangalam and Padanilam, Thamarassery, Chellot, Chitragiri and Road to Gudallor from Kerala border.
