Overview of Badrinath & Kedarnath

With an abundance of jujube tree, an edible berry in Badrinath due to which the valley got its name from as ‘badri’ means berry and ’nath’ means Lord. Badrinath is one of the Char Dhams pilgrimage sites in India and is also clled as chota dham meaning small pilgrimage. The Badrinath Valley is located at an altitude of 3,100 metres in the Gharwal Himlayas on the banks of Alaknanad River. The town is famous for its highly revered Badrinath Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu established by Adi Shankrcharya. Hence the holy town has various legends attached to it, for which the believers consider the place extremely sacred and pious. People claim the presence of Hindu God Vishnu here and thus devotees come here in huge number for pilgrimage every year.

Another highly revered temple, Kedarnath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it visited by Lakhs of devotees every year. Amidst the majestic mountain ranges and snow-clad peaks, the temple stands tall at an elevation of 3,583 meters on Gharwal mountain range near the Mandakini River. The temple is not approachable by road and therefore, devotees who wish to visit the temple have trek 18 kms uphill from Gaurikund to reach the revered site. The temple is highest among 12 Jyotirlingas in Indian subcontinent.

Apart from being home to two holy shrines in India, the two places are an example of nature’s bliss. Massive Rivers, imposing mountains, green Valleys and stagnant majestic glaciers creates a magical backdrop for the two revered locations making it a perfect getaway for trekking enthusiasts.

Badrinath Temple

One of the most important of four pilgrimage sites in India’s Char Dham Pilgrimage, Badrinath temple is highly revered by Hindus. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple is visited by lakhs of devotees every year. At a massive altitude f 10, 279 feet, the temple is enveloped by lofty mountain ranges which are under the snow blanket for al least six months in a year.

Vasudhara Falls

Location: Badrinath, Uttarakhand, India

Vashundhara Falls ascends from 400 feet high cliff making it massively tall and noisy. It is 4 km away from Badrinath and legend has it that it used to be the resting place of Pandavas. People also believe that the water falls turn away from visitors impure in thoughts and heart.

Tapt Kund

Location: Badrinathpuri, Uttarakhand, India

Believed to be the home of Lord Agni, Tapt Kund is a natural hot water spring at 45 degrees Celsius above the Alaknanda river bank where visitors take therapeutic baths. The water of the kund is believed to have medicinal properties.

Charanpaduka

Location: Charanpaduka, Badrinath, Uttarakhand, India

‘Charan’ meaning feet and ‘paduka’ meaning position, the place is believed to have Lord Vishnu’s footprints on the rock atop 3380 ft which can be reached after an arduous trek. Apart from this myth, Charanpaduka is place full of enthralling beauty and tranquility.

Neelkanth

Location: Badrinath, Uttarakhand, India

Neelkanth is a famous mountain peak in the Himalayas that overlooks the Valley of Alaknanda River. Located at a massive altitude of 6,507 meters, the peak is covered with snow almost all year round and many trekking enthusiasts trek to this peak as token of respect for Lord Shiva.

Narad Kund

Location: Badrinath, Uttarakhand, India

Kund meaning pond, Narad Kund is a sacred site on the recess of river Alaknanda from where it is believed that Adi Sankaracharya recovered the idol of Lord Vishnu.The kund is considered holy to take a bath in this hot water spring. It is considered sacred to take dip into the pond before visiting temple for darshan.

Kedarnath Temple

Location: Kedarnath Temple, Kedarnath, Uttarakhand, India

Kedarnath temple in Kedarnath is the highest among the 12 jyotirlingas in India. It is believed that temple was built around 1000 years ago with enormous stone slabs over a rectangular dais. The present temple is believed to be re-built by Adi Shankaracharya. Therefore, the temple is considered highly sacred and it is bliss to visit the temple once in your lifetime.

Vasuki Tal

Location: Kedarnath, Uttarakhand, India

It is a Lake at an altitude of 4,135 meters surrounded by massive snow-clad peaks and offers a view of the neighboring Chaukhamba peaks. The only way to visit this mystic Lake is through trekking via Chaturangi and Vasuki glaciers.

Sonaprayag

Location: Kedarnath, Uttarakhand, India

At the confluence of rivers Mandakini and Basuki and an altitude of 1829 meters, Sonaprayag is a beautiful tiny hamlet. It is believed that if you take a dip in the holy water of Sonaprayag, you could attain nirvana.

Chandrashila

Location: Chandrashila, Tungnath, Uttarakhand

Chandrashila is slope of snow-covered range that provides a brilliant trekking trail and skiing tracks all year round except in December and January. The peak lies at a massive altitude of 3,679 meters.

Gaurikund

Location: Gaurikund, Uttarakhand, India

Gaurikund is base camp site while you trek towards Kedarnath temple and is considered as holy site by Hindu devotees. It is situated at an altitude of 6,502 feet above sea level. When you trek towards revered Kedarnath temple, you will halt at Gaurikund.

Guptkashi

Location: Guptkashi, Uttarakhand, India

Another holy site on the way to Kedarnath, Guptkashi is considered religiously important as it houses ancient temples like Vishwanath temple and Ardhanareshwar temple. It is site till where you can drive and the trek towards Kedarnath commences.

Weather in Badrinath & Kedarnath

Kedarnath and Badrinatboth are high altitude regions that remains covered under the snow for atleast 4 to 5 months in winters. Summers are however pleasant and weather maximum rises to 15 to 18 degree Celsius.

Best Time to Visit

The best months to visit both the pilgrimage sites are May to September. However, the voyage can be avoided during heavy monsoon month i.e July and August.

How to Reach

Road

To reach Kedarnath, you can take a cab or taxi till Guptkashi. From there you have to trek towards the temple. If you are driving from a city like Delhi, there are no direct flights or trains between new Delhi and Badrinath. You can take a cab or bus till Haridwar and the nyou can hire a taxi till Badrinath.

By Rail:

Due to tough terrains and unfavorable conditions, no railways reach Kedarnath and Badrinath. However, the closest Railwa y station is at Haridwar, from where you can take a bus or private Taxi till Guptkashi to go kedarnath and till Badrinath respectively.

Air

Closest Airport is at Dehradun. From the Airport you can reach Guptkashi and Badrinath by taxi and can plan your further journey further to Guptkashi by cable car.
